The GT3 is arguable the greatest modern-day driver’s car.
Perhaps the greatest driver’s car period. From its naturally aspirated 3.6 liter, 415 hp engine (found in the 997 gen 1 cars), all the way up to the amazing 4.0 liter 500 hp found in the current 991.2 cars. The sound of that flat 6 revving out to 9000 rpm is my version of Beethoven’s 5th Symphony.
Sadly, naturally aspirated motors are going the way of the dodo. Even Porsche isn’t immune to the ever-increasing government regulations for increased fuel economy and lower emissions. And how do you cope with said regulations? Well, slap a turbo charger on of course.
With the upcoming release of the 991.2 GT3 RS, comes development of the new car. If reports from Australia’s Motor Mag are accurate, a new car with a turbocharged flat 6, matched to an 8 speed PDK transmission, with no manual option.
Expect a substantial increase in horsepower and torque, which means even faster 0-60 times (3.2 seconds for the current car) and most certainly a top speed of 200+ mph. Year after year, Porsche somehow manages to release a GT3 that is named greatest car of the year. Only to release a new version that’s even better, and no reason to suspect any different with the new car. The new 911 is to be revealed sometime in late 2018, with the GT3 coming around a year later.
I say bring on the turbocharger. If anyone can continue to improve upon perfection, it’s the magicians at Stuttgart.
